Repair Cafe

  • The Kingston Repair Café invites people to bring in broken items, clothing, toys, jewellery, tool sharpening, woodwork, bric a brac and more, where skilled volunteers help mend and restore these items.

Our aim with the Kingston Repair Cafe is to show our community that items can be repaired and not tossed away, and this will help our environment as well as saving our community money. We aim to not only repair items but to show people how to repair things themselves by teaching them during the cafe.

You can also just come down to see what happens and have a cup of coffee with us!

The café has an emphasis on sustainability, creativity, and community spirit, the Kingston Repair Café offers more than just practical repairs—it fosters a mindset of mindful consumption and community resilience.

As well as the café, we run sewing classes and other repair workshops throughout the year. For more information about anything to do with the Repair Café, please contact Samara at samara@kingstonnh.org.au

Playgroup

  • Proudly sponsored by Playgroup Tasmania, our Playgroup Program is held weekly at Kingston Neighbourhood House' Child Care Centre.

Our Playgroup is a relaxed, friendly, and inclusive space for families with young children to come together, play, and connect. Whether you’e a parent, grandparent, or carer – you’re warmly invited to join us for a morning of fun and friendship.

Held at Kingston Neighbourhood House, our playgroup is designed for children aged from birth to 5 years old, offering a safe and welcoming environment where little ones can explore, learn, and make new friends through play-based activities, music, craft, stories, and outdoor time.

It’s not just for the kids – it’s a lovely chance for adults to meet others, share a cuppa, and feel part of a supportive community. There’s no pressure, just a friendly and relaxed vibe where everyone is welcome.

Each week we explore a different theme, with activities to match – check out the Playgroup Facebook page to see what’s coming up!

Eating with Friends

  • Eating With Friends (EWF) is a welcoming social eating program designed to bring people together through shared meals. Based on a community development approach, EWF creates regular opportunities for social connection in communities across Tasmania – and we’re proud to be part of it here at Kingston Neighbourhood House.

What is Eating With Friends all about?

    • Sharing a nutritious meal and making new friends

    • Reducing social isolation and improving wellbeing

    • Creating regular, inclusive spaces for connection

    • Working alongside volunteers and community members to organise group meals

    • Enjoying conversation, laughter, and a sense of belonging

    A little bit of history

The first Eating With Friends group began in 2000. It was sparked by Meals on Wheels volunteers who noticed how many older people were eating alone. Community workers and volunteers came together to find a way to help – and so the first lunch group was born. It quickly became a much-loved event and has inspired many others since.

    How it works

At Kingston Neighbourhood House, we host a community lunch cooked by our wonderful volunteers. Each month on the last Friday, our community gathers to share a meal. It’s all about creating a warm and welcoming environment where everyone feels at home.

Sustainable Neighbourhoods

  • Kingston Neighbourhood House has recently taken on the Kingston Repair Café which is designed to show people how to mend items rather than throwing them away. The Repair Café is a starting point for the Kingston Neighbourhood House Sustainable Neighbourhood Project.

The Sustainable Neighbourhood Project is aimed at making the community a more environmentally friendly, resilient and sustainable neighbourhood. Our program will engage with residents through educational workshops, hands on activities and community projects. It will empower residents to adopt sustainable practices that contribute to and combat change at a local level.

    Project Objectives

    • Raise Awareness – Educate the community on the impact of climate change and how individual actions can contribute to sustainability.

    • Foster Sustainable Practices – Encourage sustainable behaviours in energy use, transportation, food consumption and waste reduction.

    • Community Collaboration – Foster a sense of shared responsibility through collaborative projects that enhance the local environment.

    • Increase Resilience – Equip residents with knowledge and tools to make their home and lifestyle more resilient to climate change.

    Key Activities and Workshops

    • Energy Efficient Homes for Renters and Owners – 2 x presentation about environmental and cost saving presented by facilitator – qualifications – Diploma of Sustainable Living.

    • Waste Reduction – 2 x presentations on how to reduce waste and save money – possible collaboration with Kingborough Council and Baretta waste Station.
